If you love the idea of home-delivery, you’ll love what California Livestock Services has to offer for your farm, ranch or home. Cody Baker, founder of CLS, noticed the trend in home-delivery services for many other industries and saw an opportunity.
Started in 2018, Baker held a full-time job while operating CLS on the side until the fall of 2019 when he decided to dedicate his time to his entrepreneurial venture, and the loyal customer base he had built.
“I have made CLS my full-time gig and have found new creative ways to serve my customers. My background was originally in the beef industry, growing up on a cow-calf operation in Northeast Tulare County. Since then, I have raised sheep, swine, poultry, dogs, cats and more. Through my life’s experiences, I have been able to broaden my skillset and ability to help others.”
His break-through idea wasn’t any spur-of-the-moment creation, it came after real-life experience.
“After working for an agricultural-based high school, and picking up feed weekly, I realized there could be a market in doing it for other people. There’s always frustration in getting home after a long day just to find out you ran out of dog or cat food and have to run to the local dollar store to buy a cheap fix to get you through until you can get to the pet/feed store.”
Baker warns of the health issues this could cause your animals, and the strain it places on your time- a valuable resource that can hurt your bottom line if not managed efficiently. “Our services can benefit all producers in a couple of different ways. Firstly, by subscribing to our feed delivery services, that opens not only more time per week for producers, but also capital. The products I offer are almost always the same price or lower priced than other feed outlets.”
With California Livestock Services, that burden no longer falls onto your shoulders. Think of it like Home-Chef for your animals. From pets to livestock, CLS offers over 400 different products- from feed to bedding- and will deliver everything you need straight to your doorstep.
That’s not where CLS services end, however.
“We also offer a forum for producers to ask questions and learn new ways to house, feed and work livestock. We work with Livestock Producers, pet owners and junior Livestock project owners.”
Baker wants customers to know that customer relationships are important to the success of the business, as they share in celebrating the victories of the families they work with. An example of this relationship is the Swall family, whose daughter, Amy Swall, recently earned the Supreme Grand Champion at the Tulare County Fair. Baker also stresses that forward-thinking is a key component to their operation.
“I am a student of forward thinkers in the Livestock world like Alan Savory, Sarah Flack and Dale Strickler, learning their ways of pasture management and how you can benefit the soil and livestock side-by- side with proper management. I also pride myself in learning the ways of Temple Grandin, and others that have completely changed the way livestock husbandry has been perceived.”
Baker wants to help producers see a new side to animal management and bring in refreshing ideas to any operation.
“Another benefit to teaming up with CLS is getting out of your echo chamber. In all industries it becomes easy to fall into an echo chamber when it comes to exchanging ideas. We offer new and exciting ideas to producers by thinking out of the box and staying up to date on the newest research and techniques from around the world. CLS offers new ways to care for livestock and land. We integrate management techniques into producers’ operations. This not only saves the producer money but rejuvenates the soil and, in turn, grows healthier pastures that can have a higher carrying capacity.”
In a world where everything from groceries, movies, and many other on-demand services are readily available at your fingertips, shouldn’t your farming or ranching business also have the same priority? Your animals, time and bottom-line deserve it.
